The Arts at Grace concert series will say hello to spring with a concert of Renaissance choral music on Saturday night, May 3 at 7:30 PM. Come to Grace and Holy Spirit Church, 13 Court Street, Cortland to enjoy this unique program by Central New York's premier early music vocal ensemble Schola Cantorum. There is no charge for admission. A reception for the audience and performers will conclude the evening.
Now in its 38th year Schola Cantorum is a 12 member chamber choir performing without instrumental accompaniment. Its members are professional and amateur musicians from throughout the greater Central New York community. The singers are devoted to music that was popular prior to the time of J S Bach in the Medieval, Renaissance and early Baroque eras. In addition to presenting several concerts annually, Schola sponsors a four-day workshop for singers each summer. The May 3 program will feature Renaissance choral settings of the popular Medieval Marian antiphon Ave Regina Caelorum (Hail Queen of Heaven) by Power, Gombert, Guerrero and Lasso, culminating in Guillaume Dufay’s great last motet and mass of the same title.
The Music Director of Schola Cantorum is Barry Torres. He has been Director of Music Ensembles at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York since 1998. There he teaches singing and a course in16th Century performance practice. Torres also directs St. Lawrence's 28-member select choir, the University Chorus, and the Gospel Choir and Band. Torres was a founding member of Schola Cantorum of Syracuse in 1973 and has been its director for eighteen years of its history. As a singer and player of early wind instruments, he has appeared with the Orchestra of Northern New York, with NYS Baroque, and as a member of Sonare. He is a graduate of the Syracuse University School of Music where he studied composition and music theory.
The Arts at Grace is a community outreach of Grace Episcopal-Holy Spirit Lutheran Church supported by many individuals, businesses, and foundations from the greater Cortland community. The series receives additional funding through the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Grants.
